Location

Southern Vietnam

The full story of Saigon — told in four acts, all within the city limits. French colonial palaces and cathedrals in the morning, the War Remnants Museum before lunch, then an afternoon crossing into Chinatown and closing the day on the Saigon River — watching the city's new skyline pass by from the water, with Landmark 81 glowing in the late afternoon light.

Ho Chi Minh City is one of the most layered cities in Southeast Asia — French colonial, wartime, Chinese immigrant, and relentlessly modern, all compressed into a single metropolis. This full-day tour takes you through all four of those layers, on foot and on the water, with a guide who has been telling this city's story for years. The morning starts with the city's colonial core. Reunification Palace — the building where North Vietnamese tanks broke through the gates on 30 April 1975, ending the Vietnam War — remains preserved almost exactly as it was that day. Your guide walks you through its reception halls, underground command bunkers, and rooftop helipad, explaining how this single building became the hinge point of modern Vietnamese history. A short walk brings you to Notre Dame Cathedral and the extraordinary Central Post Office — the most complete examples of French colonial architecture left in the city. Note: Notre Dame is currently under restoration; exterior viewing only. Before lunch, the War Remnants Museum. It is the most important stop on this tour and the hardest one to prepare for. The photographs are real. The Agent Orange documentation is the most comprehensive in the world. The exhibits on civilian casualties are presented without softening. Your guide provides historical context and moves at the pace the group needs. It takes about 90 minutes to do it properly. Lunch is a welcome reset. Afterward, the minivan crosses into District 5 — Cho Lon, Saigon's Chinatown, home to the largest Chinese-Vietnamese community in Southeast Asia. The centrepiece is Thien Hau Pagoda, a 19th-century temple dedicated to the Goddess of the Sea, where incense smoke rises constantly from giant spiral coils hanging from the ceiling. Cho Lon market surrounds it — a working wholesale market, not a tourist market, where the trade in spices, dried goods, and fabric has been running for over a century. The day closes on the water. A modern water bus carries you along the Saigon River as the late afternoon light settles on the city's skyline — Landmark 81 (Vietnam's tallest building), the Bitexco Financial Tower, and the towers of Vinhomes Central Park reflected in the river. It's a genuinely beautiful way to end a day that has covered two centuries of this city's history.
